Speaking to reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma airport after seeing off President Abdurrahman Wahid who had gone to the United States Monday, Susilo said representatives of the two conflicting parties met the president on Saturday (Sept 2) to express their commitment to find the best possible settlement to their problems and restore peace and order in their regions. "The two sides now only want to look toward the future and to save their future generations. They admit that what had happened among them was nothing but a tragedy," Susilo said. President Wahid welcomed the initiative and also expressed the wish to embark on a new phase in the settlement of the Maluku and Ambon conflict, Susilo said. The president expressed the hope that the dialogue among the warring parties would really enable them eventually to resolve their problem. He said their "dream" would come true, if their problem was settled through a mutual commitment and wanted to achieve their common desire to end their conflict. The government and local administration would only provide them with tight security during the process of dialogue until they agree on a permanent formulation for the settlement of their conflict. "This is a new phase and we are all delighted to learn about the two sides` desire to come to terms. And after that, there will be a process in which we will all be involved ," said the minister. Susilo admitted the government still had no idea what format was now to be applied to the security aspect in Maluku and Ambon but added it was probably best to maintain the civil emergency for some more time. It was too premature for the government to adopt a new approach to the situation in Maluku and Ambon, he said. But the central government really appreciated and accepted the initiative taken by religious and community leaders of the conflicting parties. "We only hope that there will be no provocation from certain mysterious elements which may only exacerbate the anguish of our brothers in Maluku and Ambon. No more new political action and violence which may hamper the process of dialogue," he said. Susilo also asked the Home Minister, the National Defence Forces (TNI Commander and Police Chief to support the process of dialogue by creating a high sense of high security among the Maluku and Ambon community.
