It is a useful alternative because:

   - you can read a description of the package in a *Help*
     window (also available via M-x describe-package after
     you have set up the ‘package-archives’ option)
   - install via Emacs
   - uninstall via Emacs, leaving no trace
   - get notices of updated versions
   - assorted other operations (see menu -> Packages once
     you have entered the *Packages* buffer)
