This is a good question.

If it is mainly the weird "\ %" syntax that irritates you - I don't know
what that should be good for, it might just be a historic artifact.  You
can safely ignore it, because

   "%M\ %S\ %p\ %P\ %5y:%B%(%g%)\n"

and

   "%M%S%p%P%5y:%B%(%g%)\n"

are equivalent.

The expression in the manual that you cited above is still slightly
different (and probably just a bit outdated).  See the description of
the character codes for an explanation of that remaining difference.
