Karl,

I actually did not set this one up. It was in place when I was hired.
However, I do run one at home as well.

The school's runs on an old nameless box running a PII with Gentoo Linux
on it. That is all that box does, and it handles it just fine. So, it
does not take much to make it work. We do not use any of the caching
capabilities, just the filtering.

At home I run it on a PIII box with 512MB of ram running OpenSuse, but I
am in the process of moving it to a virtualized server again running
OpenSuse on a much bigger, faster box for the simple reason that it is
my web and mail server as well. Before moving it though there were no
troubles, but not much traffic either.

I know it is also available for Windows NT/XP/2003. I have never played
with that, but Jason said he has.

I am looking to add a Squid Proxy Cache here, and I know there are
lots of folks out there that already use it. What are some best
practices for installing and managing it? What OS did you install it
on? What size machine? Did you use a binary or an already compiled
installer? I have been scanning the squid website, and I just want to
see what other school's did in practice.
