Actually, I can see her point, and I have no problem with linux. She may very well have been unable to install the client and drivers needed for her broadband modem, and while Office 2003 formats are fairly well supported by open office, office 2007 presents a real challange, or it did last I looked.
Also keep in mind, the classes she was taking absolutely required word. Why? Who knows, maybe she was taking a class on MS word? Sure, you or I would have no issues with this, I could even get it to load on linux, you probably would have even less trouble, but she couldn't.
