Yes, that looks exactly like the solution that was chosen for the multiselect in m23, too (but I think only CSS was used to display a checkmark or an empty box as a bg image - however, that won't work on mobile, without Ctrl key, I believe, so no matter what, it's going to need some js - maybe not a whole library, though.).
