For me, a depressing thing about most recent election campaigns has been the sameness of the messages from all sides, namely "Have we got a deal for you", with the emphasis on the "you". Somewhere in all that election rhetoric, was there a vision of a better Australia, a fairer Australia, a more compassionate Australia, an Australian community? Did I miss something in the 15 second sound bites?Somewhere on the net, about three days before the election, I came across a poster which had been produced by on of the church social responsibility agencies which said something like "This election, will you consider casting a vote for somebody else?" and another one with a larger number of words on it that suggested that people consider how policies would affect the whole of society not just themselves.I was very disappointed that I'd found them so late - I would have loved to have ordered a few to put up around campus.OTOH, I did manage to get some of my son's year 12 friends who were voting for the first time to reconsider how they might vote on the basis of the potential size of their HECS debts under the Coalition's vs Labour's policies. I didn't realise I was doing this - I was simply commenting on my unhappiness with the Coalition policy on higher education and they responded that this meant they'd need to rethink how they were going to vote.Judy
