I had exactly the same thing when trying to install under VMware - it reached 84%, then sat at that stage for several hours despite there being continual CD access. It wasn't possible to open a terminal to check the logs as it had become almost totally unresponsive by that stage.
Given other comments on the forum, I upped the memory allocated to the VM from 512MB to 1GB and tried again - this time the installation flew through with no problems. Given how slow the original install was before it reached the 84% point, I'm guessing that it was probably swapping like crazy, so unfortunately it looks like the installer is just too heavyweight for half a gig of RAM.
