You'd need to be specific about which GNU utilities you're looking for; 
we do place some in /usr/sfw/bin, but many will be part of the Software 
Companion (which install into /opt/sfw); that's a separate download.

No, it's not necessarily used for a volume manager, though you can use 
if you just want to use the whole disk.  Most of the time, the disk 
you're installing to will be carved up into other slices which are used 
instead.

through the docs to see if there's anything to point you at specifically.
