I appreciate all the feedback on this matter. You are thinking about shared polling in ways we hadn't foreseen, and that's great.

It is, in fact, too late in the 4.6 cycle to be adding or adjusting features. At this point, our work on 4.6 is pretty much limited to fixing bugs as you and we find them.

However, we will be looking at what it will take to implement this idea correctly for a future version. There have been suggestions that acknowledging one instance of a shared device could acknowledge all instances, too. These two ideas clearly go together, and we will be examining them that way.
