Hey Group!
Lately I've been trying to track down why networks that should be fast,
aren't.
The support people at the ends don't have a lot of experience.
My biggest problem usually turns out to be a duplex mismatch.
But - my experience with Intermapper isn't great on this one.
It seems that sometimes (often enough) that Intermapper disagrees with the
device.
I know Dartware will say: "We're just reporting back what the device
says", but when I
telnet to the device (mostly Cisco and HP switches) and look at the
interface it says something different.
So, I just want to confirm if you guys see the same as I do.
When looking at the interface and you see "100 MBit" - does that means
half duplex?
As opposed to "100 MBit FD" - which presumably is full duplex.
So if the "FD" isn't there Intermapper is saying that it is half duplex.
Like negative option billing, if it doesn't say FD then its HD??
I would rather see an HD.
Anybody else have experience with confusing Duplex indications from
Intermapper?
Interesting. As far as I knew IM wasn't able to automatically set the
duplex on a link correctly. In my experience it always has to be set
manually if it differs from the default Baseband setting in the "Set Link
Speed" dialog box you get when right clicking on a link. If this isn't
true for some kinds of devices I'd like to know which ones.
FWIW, the vast majority of duplex mismatch problems I see are when someone
sets one side of the link to full duplex while leaving the other to auto.
The auto side tries to auto-negotiate and getting no response, assumes a
dumb hub and sets itself to half. We generally avoid this by using auto
everywhere and looking closely at anything that auto-negotiates to half.
The only problems we've had with _auto_ not working are with a few older
fiber media converters.
