So, this is one of those questions that I haven't seen answered definitively. 
My understanding is:

- If you get a CDMA phone (Verizon or Sprint), which this phone you'll be able 
to roam on GSM networks in Europe, etc…, assuming you have a roaming plan.

- The AT&T phone is locked, though you can buy an unlocked one for a bunch more 
money.

- All CDMA phones are locked (is there such a thing as an 'unlocked' CDMA 
phone? I don't think so but I could be wrong). You can't get a Verizon phone 
and use it on Sprint (at least not without some hackery).

I believe the primary benefit for customers is to be able to get a CDMA phone 
that works in the US but also be able to roam overseas. For Apple, it means 
manufacturing only one kind of phone, so they love it.

Anyone have more info?
