This has been an interesting thread and I have learned a lot from it.
Regarding the patterns, can they be changed to show anything other
than or in addition to the numbers 0-9? For example, I tried changing

<input type="text" pattern="[0-9]*" />

to

<input type="text" pattern="[0-5]*" />

and it doesn't work.  It would really be cool if you could.  It would
be cool if you could assign each of the 10 buttons to a number or
letter or decimal.
