As you stated above RFC2460 does talk about the AH and ESP, but the AH spec itself contains the following text.

"In the IPv6 context, AH is viewed as an end-to-end payload, and thus
 should appear after hop-by-hop, routing, and fragmentation extension
 headers."

I do not have any strong opinions on whether to include AH and ESP in the Backward compatibility section. I can change the text to add AH and ESP if there is working group consensus to do so.
