Their distance might be crap, and their technique may look dangerous but the 
fact is that beginners don't generate the speed and forces necessary to 
puncture a jacket, even with a broken blade.   Don't REALLY agree with that.... 
<remembering a certain former UCD beginner who hit quite hard repeatedly until 
opponent was dead on the piste- Eoin fenced him, and he's Owen's favorite 
beginner of all time>    An old, weakened blade is gonna break in the hands of 
a beginner, just as easily as a more experienced fencer.  Hell, 2 wks ago Dan 
thought he was fencing a wild boar in training and tried to skewer it, 
thankfully the broken top 8 inches of the blade only went through my lame and 
slightly into my jacket.... My shoulder was NOT amused, particularly when 
followed by the comment.. " you broke my foil..."     ?!?!?!?
