Force has nothing to do with the level of our fencing. Wrong. If I remember
my leaving cert physics: Force = Mass * Acceleration. The higher the level of
fencer the greater the acceleration which he can generate both with his legs
and with his arm. Therefore the forces involved when 2 high level fencers come
up against each other are dramatically greater then when 2 low level fencers do
so. There are plenty of fencers in Ireland, myself included, who would be
capable of hitting quite hard and probably drive a broken blade through a
jacket. Actually I don't think you could, but seeing as no one is likely to
give up their jacket to test this hypotosis it's a mute point. As for what I
think the standards should be... I think that a jacket (preferably 350 newton)
& 350 newton plasteron should be adaquate for low level competitions in foil
and sabre. For epee competitions and higher level foil & sabre competitions
(Open, Easts etc) I think that 350 newton breeches should be required as well
as 350n jacket and plasteron. As for the price of plasterons? 18.99 from
Leon Paul. 33.45 from PBT 27 from Allstar I don't care how poor a student
you are; You wouldn't go on a night out in Dublin with this little money in
your pocket. Take one Saturday night off, and use the money saved to buy a
plasteron.
