Subject: Vienna Citizens Campaign Against Nudity Vienna Citizens Campaign Against Nudity
Ahmed Al-Matboli, IOL Correspondent
VIENNA, February 21, 2006 (IslamOnline.net) Vienna
citizens have joined forces in calling for nude-free editions of the
mass-circulation and charge-free daily Heute, calling the inside photos
offensive and immoral.
"The anti-nudity campaign participants, regardless of their
religious affiliations, are seeking to ban the publication of these nude
images," campaign organizer Johannes Unossan told IslamOnline.net Monday,
February 20.
The daily is distributed in the Vienna underground with
images of women posing nude included on its pages to the irk of travelers of
different age groups.
"These obscene images make my blood boil every day," Unossan
fumed.
Heute is distributed in
coordination between the Vienna transport agency and a major press
institution.
More Harm
Unossan said the paper's mass circulation made it incumbent
upon him to contact its managing board to stop the publication of the nude
images and replace them with valuable information for the travelers during their
commutes to work.
"I warned them that it would do more harm than good
especially if the publishers paid no heed to morals and ethics," he
added.
Unossan has also launched a Web site to garner the support
of Vienna citizens in his campaigning against nudity.
The online appeal drew until Sunday, February 19, nearly
1,200 supporters, mostly women.
"Every supporter has his/her own motives, but we are all
wedded to the same goal which is taking these images off the
paper."
"As far as I'm concerned, I didn't imagine my children
staring at these lustrous images and that is why I championed this campaign to
protect the people's religious and moral values."
Children also voted for the ban.
"I go red-faced when I spot these images," said 13-year-old
Hurbert on Unossan's Web site. "But I'm used to reading the interesting short
stories in the paper."
Muslim Support
The campaign has further drawn support from the Muslim
minority.
"The initiative was taken by a Christian and if Muslims had
objected they would have been called extremists and described as having
oppressive attitudes towards women," Iyad Ali, a Syrian student, told
IOL.
Ahmed Abdallah, a programmer, said that Muslims and
Christians should be united in fighting vice.
"Unossan deserves respect for his initiative and he gives a
good example for all Europeans," added Amgad Maree.
