I agree that hostnames should be an option, but let's do hostnames in a
follow-on JIRA.
I think hostnames are actually a similar can of worms to IP addresses. A
single node can have many host names (even multiple on one interface, and a
node can have arbitrarily many network interfaces). Also, some people are
really, really bad at choosing hostnames (you see hostnames like
"afbsadf34g2g4t3" or something, and referring to nodes by ip addresses is
actually shorter in many (most?) cases. Finally, hostnames just take up more
space on the wire and I am sensitive to that.
