Mark Robert Miller commented on SOLR-14636:
-------------------------------------------

So one of the things we really have to work on is making it easier for
developers to fire up a system and use it in a real way. It needs to be so easy
that people actually do it and things work and are exercised in a real manner.

A huge problem we have is that you can only really start to move forward when
you admit you have a problem. The majority of our developers hardly run Solr.
Are not responsible for a Solr cluster. Don't feel the pain that they inflict
other than getting paid more to deal with the fallout as it happens. Who
understands how bad the current system is? Who is very unhappy about it? The
people that have to run it and manage it and deal directly with the fallout.
For everyone else, it's just something that keeps our employment stable. We
gave you a leaky sink and now we get a regular plumber job. If many of these
same devs moved into a position of directly being responsible for their
creation, you would see a LOT of improvements. Now that is hard to achieve, but
we can at least minimize the friction required for devs to at least easily get
a taste of the medicine they are dishing out.

The people that I talk to that don't have a direct responsibility and
relationship of managing SolrCloud in real life, in production, hardly have a
clue of the real state of things. Sure, they know things are not great, but
also they are not that bad. But once you start talking to people that have a
direct connection and reliance on the dog food  we produce, now I'm not wasting
my breath anymore, because now I'm talking to people that understand the
situation we are in and the downward trajectory as the system grows on a flakey
base. We need to make it much easier for more people to have more of that
connection - because then we will see some changes in behavior and
contributions.
