Dug into this — this isn't a regression, it's a syntax mismatch.
`tagNameFormat`'s own Javadoc (since 2.2.0, well before 3.0.1) says:
> Property interpolation is performed on the tag, but in order to ensure
that the interpolation occurs during release, you must use `@{...}` to
reference the properties rather than `${...}`.
And the parameter's own default value uses that syntax:
`@{project.artifactId}-@{project.version}`.
With `v${project.version}` (standard Maven `${...}`), Maven's own
plugin-parameter injection resolves it *before* the release plugin runs,
against the current (SNAPSHOT) project — there's a comment in
`AbstractInputVariablesPhase` explicitly about this: "Must get default version
from mapped versions, as the project will be the incorrect snapshot". The
plugin's own `@{...}` interpolator runs later, against the already-computed
release version, specifically to avoid that.
Using `tagNameFormat=v@{project.version}` instead of `v${project.version}`
should give you `v1.8` as expected.
