It is a bit disturbing that uninstall of a different piece of software allows
improved success at copy-paste between files of two other programs. It affirms
that the Windows clip-board may have some subtleties that are not being dealt
with properly. That there may be a privacy-preservation issue is a concern.

Can you determine exactly what updated Java version was installed on your
machine? Was it a 32-bit or 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE)?

If this problem recurs, it would be useful to try several things:

 1. Find a small simple case of an OpenOffice Calc sheet and a Notepad document
that repeatedly demonstrates the issue.

 2. See if the Notepad document has been saved, see if having it be in UTF-8
instead of the default format on Windows makes a difference.

 3. See if the you can return to the Notepad document (where the copy selection
should remain), copy again, and then paste successfully into the Calc document.
 Try maybe three times, tops.

 4. See if you can use Microsoft Wordpad or even an OpenOffice Writer document
to copy from instead.

These are all for demonstration of repeatability and also identifying a
possible work-around until something deeper can be figured out.
