That's stuff I have actually never done myself, I've merely skimmed the
theory of it. The details are explained in chapter 9 of the PDF
specification.

If you prefer the trial and error path, have a look at
TextRenderInfo.getStringWidth --- this at least is the Java method name.
Here you see the graphic state's word spacing and character spacing values
in action. in a context very much like yours.
