Some might remember an earlier post where I had assumed that my
pvr250mce tuner was blown (just get static now) and that I needed to
get a replacement for it.

Well I was just checking my system logfiles to just see how the system
was running and noticed something startling.

I'm getting the infamous dmesg log entry:

ivtv: Setting Tuner 47
tuner: tuner type not set

I don't really understand, now I'm going through my system and trying
to figure out why my tuner stopped working all of a sudden. The
kernel and tuner.o is the same as it's always been (since september). Also now I can't remember when it went out.. I just remember thinking
it had to do with a power outage. I've been updating some stuff from
mandrake 10.1, but I can't remember all the things I've updated off
it. Maybe one of those updates did it. hmm.

Probably.

Anyways, if the tuner is defective (like fried), would you expect to
see static coming back from it? I don't think so, though now I'm sad
I didn't notice this earlier.

Don't know, either. I would expect that the tuner module would fail to load giving you i2c errors (i.e. something to the effect of "i2c address 0x61 not found").

I seem to remember that "tuner not set" is always just a matter of the
tuner.o module not being compiled right. In my case I didn't change
the kernel at all and somehow my tuner went from working to not set. Hoping someone might have seen something like this before?

Right. It means that your tuner module does not support the tuner type you need (i.e. tuner 47). You'll need to recompile your tuner module--just like you did way back when we were first getting started with these new tuners. :) It's possible that the distro overwrote your working tuner module with an older version--I've found that distros don't typically like people to make changes to the system without going through the distro's "ease-of-use" tools. ;)

Let us know if you encounter difficulties with the recompile. Remember to check the "new_tuners" directory on Chris's server for the patches.
