For completeness and for the archives, here's a conversation from IRC with chutt on #mythtv:

[10:39] Chutt: heh
[10:39] Chutt: don't use 2.6.10's kernel source on debian
[10:39] Chutt: unless they've fixed a rather major fuckup, you can't compile any external modules with it
[10:40] _rkulagow_: now i understand why debian is so slow. must be because of all the error checking
[10:40] _rkulagow_: is that why i can't install new ivtv modules?
[10:40] Chutt: well, they'd install
[10:40] Chutt: they wouldn't load.
[10:40] Chutt: missing symbols
[10:41] _rkulagow_: well, you're the first person that's actually had some answers, even though they're OT here.
[10:41] _rkulagow_: is that why i'm seeing
Warning: could not find versions for .tmp_versions/ivtv.mod
*** Warning: "cleanup_module" [/root/ivtv-0.3.2l/driver/wm8775.ko] undefined!
[10:41] _rkulagow_: etc, etc?
[10:41] Chutt: i spent an entire evening trying to figure out why i couldn't install the plextor drivers
[10:41] Chutt: that's exactly it
[10:41] Chutt: the kernel package maintainers are morons, essentially.
[10:42] _rkulagow_: good to know. solution?
[10:42] saablover: use the vanilla sources
[10:42] Chutt: yup
[10:42] _rkulagow_: i googled for hours and hours and hours and didn't get anywhere
[10:42] Riff-Raff: how hard is it to get patches accepted to ffmpeg?
[10:42] saablover: and patch up if you need something
[10:42] Chutt: it was someone's smart idea to split out some of the kernel build scripts into a separate package
[10:42] Chutt: ie, the stuff that generates the module loading support code
[10:43] Chutt: however, they're stuck on 2.6.8 for that package
[10:43] Chutt: and things have changed since
[10:43] Chutt: so the newer kernel source tries to use the old scripts
[10:43] Chutt: and stuff fails, badly

So, the issue appears to be something specific to how Debian is doing things. I'm compiling 2.6.11 from kernel.org now, so hopefully this is the end of this thread.
