I'd say, it's a good idea, but it does not work so good on RC cars. They're not heavy enough. Most of the energy gained by rolling downhill is eaten up by the gear. And, if you're not very fast, the voltage from the (generator-) motor is lower than the battery voltage. Converting it up to charge the battery cost another amount of energy. You can buy DC/DC converter modules for little money, but those have constant voltage outputs. For battery charging, regulated adjustable current would be best.
