pinmap.json includes pin definition, maybe it can be used to cross-check which pins should be available in device file. I can remember you're already using it for pin aliases generation.
Indeed, C4/C5 are input only (though can be output when USB is enabled, not our concern). It make sense to me to remove pin_Xy_direction, but surely it'll raise some questions.
