Actually, I have an even simpler plan. If you are happy, I can send you
the patched Avalon jars to add to the James cvs. Alternatively, once the
patches are in the avalon cvs they could be got from there.
Re SMTP. That should be easy to add, if people want. I'll try and do it
over the next few days.

Yup!
Yes, it is relatively straightforward. That's the advantage of using the
JSSE. Trying to do this from raw JCA would have been much harder, me
thinks.
