I would suggest you to take a look at Hypersonic SQL, a small and
efficient 100% pure java oper source SQL database that comes with a BSD
license.
It has a JDBC driver so I think it's possible to possible to distribute
it with James (it's 100kb jar or something slightly more) and have users
able to use database for storage right there.
Of source, being based on JDBC, using your RDBMS is just a configuration
away... but out of the box installation is always a nice thing to have.
