It is certainly possible to have "hundreds" of processes for one user,
on a suitably configured machine and OS.

Under Solaris, I have encountered the error you described when the
configured swap space (in the OS) is not sufficient.  You might have
whoever is sysadmin for your Solaris installation take a look.
