The product is very much worth it if you are an Amazon or eBay. But I am
not. I want to get there, and when I do...

Not too hard to start off with (that's what JMeter does), but it gets very
complex very quickly. I want to simulate multiple unique users
(username/password combos) with persistent sessions (cookies) accessing a
list of pages (a script?) that can take either random data to enter/query
on, or take data from the execution context itself (I just pulled up Company
X, add an order for that Company). Then all of that has to boil down to a
few idiot-proof charts and graphs. Nothing extreme, but the aggregation of
it all creates the timeline...
I think that I will someday get to this, but because I think it would take
at least a couple of months to get what I wanted, I have to wait. I must
finish this project first, deliver on Jan 1, Y2K, watch it blow up, take a
vacation, and then I'll be able to focus on it.
