I don't know whether cross-version serialization belongs in Lucene. We need to discuss it, to find out how many users might want it, how many developers might fear it, how reasonable their fears are, etc.
The discussion so far has not been an easy one. There have been many claims made which have little to do with the technical issue. As a project, we must reach consensus before we can do anything. Polarized comments do not help build consensus.
