i don't really have any, except that I don't necessarily trust the current
wildcard tests. Shouldn't they have detected 2.9.0 scorer bug? :)

ok, i will work at this some more. obviously i could pare it down to just what
we are using, but i am trying to preserve 'reasonable' functionality that might
be handy elsewhere.
