Tried these and couldnt get it to work. Still having the same problems.

try:

LANG=C java newgui (to use the ASCII character set)
or
LANG=en_US java newgui (to use ISO-8859-1)
or
LANG=en_US.UTF-8 java newgui (to use UTF-8 unicode)
