Well open source would be disaster for a lot of people, including me. Not
only would the quality slip, service die and future progress drag to a
complete stop, but it would seriously curtail the creation of commercial
products. I wish one of the Sun people would comment on this.

What is a RIF anyway?

I have no links. I am just going on private conversations. The RIF
pertains to all of the
Java Media API's from my understanding. If someone has more info, please
forward.

One reason that I am concerned is that I have nearly completed my book on
Java Media
API's--if there is a major brain drain of the Media API's--well I think you
can see
the potential problems.

So, what I understand is that there will be a much smaller group developing
Java3D.
This will probably delay the release of v. 1.4.

Once we get the whole story, we can start to see where to go from here. I
really don't
know how serious the situation is but I would like to see some info...

This may be a good time to ask, "when is Java3D going open source"....

I had not heard this. Is this in reference to the 2D stuff, or is there
some danger to the future of Java3d? Can you post some links?

    Hello--

I have heard from reliable sources that the Java Media APIs are
dramatically cutting back and RIFing many talented people.
At first this would seem really bad but in thinking about it
I know that much opportunity comes out of these situations.

Two things I would like to see discussed are:

    1) Can someone at Sun (perhaps Mike Schullman) fill us in on
what is happening? These changes affect all of us and
we should not be kept in the dark about the future
    plans.

    2) Any entrepreneurs out there have some ideas of
how we can make lemonade out of these lemons?

I would like to wish all of those who lost their jobs
the best. There are many fine people among those
and I am sure you will all land on your feet in a
    big way.

    Alex
