Frankly, the scene graph model in Java 3D does not present a robust and
flexible framework to describe the virtual world. Consider the following
points:
1) This model does not present a natural way to describe the world around
you;
2) This model does not have a robust way to handle user interactions with
the virtual world;
3) You have no idea what time means in this model, so it's difficult to
simulate dynamic behaviors of world objects.
4) It's never a easy work for ordinary programmers to develop 3D
applications (consider most developers can write a nice html page).
I believe these are the main reasons to the fact that the Java 3D has not
gained the massive popularity in the past few years. If the Java 3D
development is still on this track, I don't believe it will have a bright
future in the near term.
Our product, the WorldShow3D browser, uses Java 3D APIs in the pure
immediate model (mainly in graphics rendering), but it is completely
built
on a new world model, i.e., the Show Stage model. We have incorporated
the
most fundamental elements of a world (i.e., space, time, and human
interactions) into the software design, and the Show Stage model has
overcome many limitations of the Scene Graph model in other 3D virtual
world
framework.
So I really think the combination of Java 3D APIs and the Show Stage
model
can bring the virtual environment to every computer, and then this can
help
Java 3D rebirth. Hope you can join me.

More JAVA3D--This article will appear in Jan 2004 issue of Advanced
Imaging.
Contact me if you want a copy of the issue--it's being printed now

Not in the Reuters article, I guess they don't care
about 'nuts and bolts' of a "internet language in
Mars", but in James Grosling article I found it:
"... All of this 3-D, walk-through visualization is
using standard Java APIs like Java 3-D API, Java
Advanced Imaging API, Java networking APIs and the
user interface APIs. ..."
So, we are there ;)
