Sorry, what you give aren't information but opinions. Or in other words:
you only tell us that "people say, J3D is dead". There is no information
about the source where you get this information from (beside the strange
"we know it because we heard it").

Check this list archives for threads about this topic or javagaming.org forums. There have been "as much as possible official" mails from more than one member of Java3D team about "holding pattern", "end of collaboration" and the like. Java3d 1.4 has been freezed, now we should already have specs according to plans. There have been some good news, like j3d for mac. There has been a very official silence from sun. This in about the last seven months.

These are not rumors, i think mail posted in this list in the past
months are "best available infos" about java3d state.
This is the first example I found

http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0308&L=java3d-interest&P=R5179&D=0&H=0&I=-3&O=A&T=1

there are other post like this.

And I'm really amused when I hear from you that nobody at Sun is doing
anythin for J3D when I see that the buglist is managed well. The last bug
I entered month after you published your "information" was answered very
fast. So who is maintainig this list if all J3D developers are fired?

If I remember correctly at least 3 developers were moved on other projects or fired. I think now there should be just one developer (fulltime?). This list is very low traffic now, I've seen no posts from java3d developers recently.

I think, the only _serious_ and appropriate information which is available
at the moment, are the statements from Sun - also if it aren't very much
(to avoid the word "poor").

I think last "official" statement from sun was "java3d is still supported but, at this time, new development is stopped".

Bye
