It's a hard question. If you can afford spending a bit more, go with a
NAS with Ethernet connection: all the operating system will see it
natively as a remote drive. For instance, I have a Lacie NAS that
works fine with every o.s. I think that internally it uses XFS, but it
doesn't matter after all. OF course it properly manages extended
attributes such as those in Mac OS X.
