Fair enough, with a remark. I reckon that there are two major family of requirements for applications, the former let's say "C-oriented" and the latter "Java/C#/whatever/OO/functional/-oriented". I call the former "system programming", even though this could be my personal jargon. I reckon that C is ok for those requirements and that it makes sense to have a 21st century C and that it might be go. Outside of this, I see things as "compiled natively to machine code" a big step backward. Note that I'm not advocating Java, because I put also C# in the picture. The benefits of having intermediate code, including the security aspects, the easiness of manipulation both static and dynamic, and all the relevant tools that have been built upon it (e.g. JPA implementations, AOP, Cobertura,...) are something that very few in the non-system development would abandon.
