I would suggest Java How To Program as it is more comprehensive. If
you're ready to read a lot (it's a very thick book  with lots of
exercises) it's a very good book.  As for the book Thinking in Java,
it's not a very good book for beginners. I tried reading the first few
chapters of this book and I don't find it very helpful. It's not very
easy to understand compared to the How To Program book.
