I would suggest Java How To Program as it is more comprehensive. If you're ready to read a lot (it's a very thick book with lots of exercises) it's a very good book. As for the book Thinking in Java, it's not a very good book for beginners. I tried reading the first few chapters of this book and I don't find it very helpful. It's not very easy to understand compared to the How To Program book.
