Java as a programming language is too boring for a beginner but the importance of the concepts and applications are infinite. Personally speaking, if you are a good reader, I would suggest you Learning Java by O'Reily <http://oreilly.com/catalog/9781565927186> and if you have a habit of losing interest while reading (similar to my case), my advise would be to first learn all the concepts by watching free video tutorials at http://www.javavideotutes.com/lessons and read the book and online articles simultaneously.
Go slow and with the concepts and you'll start enjoying it rather than learning just because it lands you in a good job. Hope that helps. Cheers!
