FYI, The screen-reader does not control the ***, it is the operating system, website, and applications. Sighted users also see these, because it is a security measure. The difference between Jaws and Windows Eyes in these situations may simply be the way the screen reader obtains the information from the computer. In my line of thinking, the key echo setting in Jaws is mis-named since it's clear in the password fields that Jaws is actually echoing what is printed on the screen, and not the actual key that is being pressed.
