Yes, it is relatively painless. The hardest part is some of the router manufacturer websites haven't been the friendliest places in terms of accessibility. Occasionally, there might be a couple different versions of the same router and you have to determine from a picture which one you have to get the correct download, kind of like Jaws 32 versus 64-bit.

Basic procedure:
1. Determine your router's model number and version if necessary. Download the firmware on a computer that you can hook directly to the router, it will probably be a .bin file. (In the past, I have updated one of my routers using a wireless connection, but this is definitely risky as if something happens during the transfer, you could end up hosing the router.

2. With your PC hooked up to the router, go to the router setup site i.e. 192.168.0.1 or whatever, depending on your manufacturer and whether you changed the default option.

3. Find the setting area that allows you to update the firmware. There should be a download button that will let you browse to the file on your computer and initiate the update.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] updating router fermware question

Hi,

Has anyone updated firmware for their router, if so is it a painless but yet
accessible adventure?

I'm being told that I need to update the firmware for my netgear which is
why I am asking.

What method does one take to any who answers to accomplish this?

Thanks.
