You might be hearing Anna and narrator rather than NVDA, if it is a female voice.
Insert q wouldn't work if you are hearing narrator.
Also insert N for the NVDA menus wouldn't work if you are hearing narrator.

Press insert plus N and go into options and have NVDA not to start up at computer start up.
Insert plus Q turns off NVDA for the current session.
