The other thing you can do is start typing the contact name in and then hit Ctrl K. This will then present you with a list of all matches containing what you have typed so far. The more you type in, the more precise the choice list is. I use this all the time.

Sometimes it just won't do it at all, and brings up nothing. If I shut down the computer and reboot, it will work.
