That doesn't sound too difficult. The stand alone devices also are duable.
Nice to have options. Thanks for all of your help/suggestions, if it didn't
solve the problem, least I gain some knowledge on how to look and check out
drives and other devices.

It is a pretty easy fix, there will either be a screw in the bottom of your
laptop, or a cover that comes off revealing the screw. Remove this screw,
with the drawer out of the drive, and it will pull right out. Put the new
drive in, in the reverse order. If the new drive comes with a disk, put this
in first thing to install the driver and any related software.

Thank you Mike for all your help, it is a mystery, which since everything
seems to point to the device is enabled, it must be the device it's self or
this Slimtype software hindering it from working.
I plan to purchase the canned air and see if that makes any difference.

If it's the device gone bad, is this something easily replaced or does it
require some tech person to install?

Thanks again,

Trish

Sorry Trish,

Its been a while since I have had to fool with any of that stuff. Since the
drive says "Disable" in the context menu of Device Manager, that means that
it is enabled of course. To find where to change the drive letter and path,
you will need to go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel, open this, and
close Component Services, and arrow down to Storage, and inside of this,
focus on Disk Management. Everything I have read, says to tab to open Disk
management, and this works, but I do not find the DVD drive in this list. I
have seen it here before, but tonight I did not. Normally, in Disk
management, you can focus on the drive in question, and right click it, and
then find the "Change drive letter and path" item. You can check your
computer to see if your DVD drive appears here or not. I will do some
further research to try and find the correct answer to this question.

Mike,

When I open the device mgr, then go to the DVD/CD-ROM right arrow to open,
down arrow to find the item, then context key, this is what I find..

update driver software...
disable
uninstall
scan for hardware changes
properties

same items are showing for the disk drive except minus the disable option

Under "computer" right arrow open, down arrow to item, this is what's
there..
ACPI-x64 based PC

For the BD-ROM Drive (E:)
context shows these items..

open
open new window
scan with MSE...
share with (submenu)
burn to disk
format...
eject
copy
create shortcut
properties

Trish,

I believe that the two real problems in the list that you posted were "drive
disabled in device manager", and "drive associated to device is either not
recognizable or is incorrect letter". Both of these problems can be
addressed in the device manager context menu when focused on the device. You
should be able to open the context menu, and press enter on Enable, and
take care of that problem. There is also the option to change the drive
letter in the context menu as well. If you cannot figure that one out,
contact me off list, and I can guide you through the process.

Update David and list,

I dl and ran this tool, however it was still unable to fix the problem. It
gave me 6 items of problems and all of which I am still pretty clueless as
to figure out just how to proceed here.
Some of the items were..
drive disabled in device manager
Slimtype not readable of disk
*this software was #1 on the list*
drive associated to device is either not recognizable or is incorrect letter
something to do with filters being low in the registery and/or not readable
or recognizable

so basically MS couldn't fix it. I guess I'll try to remove it.

Trish:
I would go back to the email that talked about cleaning it out with a can
of compressed air.
There are a lot of very small moving parts that would not take much to
disrupt with dust and so on. There is a moter that spins the disk and there
is also a moter that moves the reading head back and forth over the disk
and it moves along a rail that has a very small gear that rolls along a
rail with really fine teath, so you can see how it might just be
constipated.

What I don't get here is, it states the device is working properly, yet I
can't get it to work when inserting a disk. I even tried different ones. I
know it worked early last year because I installed printer software, haven't
popped anything into the drive since then though.

Hello Mike,

Here's what it states..
I found this info from your first set of instructions. So if it's driver is
the best already, then I guess it's the device it's self that is not
working?
Update Driver So ftware - Slimtype BD E DS4E1S
The best driver software for your device is already installed
Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.

Hi trish,

Have you tried updating the driver for the drive? focus on the drive in
computer, open the context menu and open properties, control over to the
driver tab, and press enter on update driver. Now press enter on search
automatically for the driver for this device. if this does not work, go to
device manager, and find the CD drive to see the make and model of it, then
browse to the manufacturer's web site to find the latest driver, download
and install it. Ottherwise, it could be a bad connection, or the drive may
need to be replaced.

I have been trying to figure out why this is not working. I have checked
some areas which have told me, that this device is working properly, but
when I insert the disk and close the tray, it sounds like it's starting to
go, but then nothing.
I put another disk in same thing, can anyone more knowledgeable in this area

please help?
