Hi.
Some of you may find the sharp keys application useful.
If you would rather just download it directly from my dropbox,
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1586962/sharp%20keys.zip
but you can find it on the web by googling it if you'd rather not grab a file sent from someone else.

sharp keys allows you to re map most keys to be other keys. For instance my Lenovo Yoga 2 pro uses fn and page down key for the insert key. I re-mapped my pause break key I believe it was, to be insert, and insert to be pause break or some such as that. This worked out perfectly because the pause key or what ever I made it, is the key to the left of my delete key, lol. Also a lot of laptops these days use what they often call action keys, these take the function keys f1 etc and make them do other actions by default when you just press the button. For instance pressing f5 may turn down the speaker volume, f4 may increase brightness. Use FN to get the original behavior, to actually press f5, or f4 etc. On some, the insert key may do some other function and only be insert if you hold down fn, just like with the function keys. For those computers, some allow you to change the default behavior so that you have to hold down fn to get them to be action keys, pressing without fn just leaves them as regular function keys. Generally this is done in the system bios.

Note that re-mapping keys with sharp keys will mess up external keyboards. For instance if you don't like where delete is on the laptop, so you make the right bracket key your delete key and your delete key your right bracket key, that'll be all messed up on a different keyboard with normal layout. Stands to reason it is not keyboard specific. Also note that sharp keys modifies your registry, it can be uninstalled after you finish modifying your keys or deleted (if you use the portable version). There is no third party application that has to be running for the re-mapping to be in affect.

That''s right. If you set JAWS to the laptop keyboard layout, the caps Lock does function as the JaAWS and Insert keys. Great.

Sounds to me like it may be time for a wireless keyboard with all of the
keys on it. That's what I use and its great. I have one from Logitech and
one from hp.

There's no dedicated numpad on this keyboard either. <g>

Hi Kimber,

The number pad key 0, which you know as the JAWS key when the Num Lock is
turned off, also serves as the insert key. Therefore, the JAWS and the
Insert key are one in the same.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] No insert key on my new laptop keyboard

Hey All,

I just got a new laptop and there is no insert key on the keyboard. It
has been replaced by a double-sized delete key.

I use the caps lock for my jaws key so that's not the problem. But is
there some key combination I can utilize to invoke insert mode?

And who the heck thought this new keyboard design was a good idea? Why
do I need a double sized delete key anyway? Sheesh!

All suggestions welcome. I'm stuck with this laptop for reasons I
won't go into. Nor is an external keyboard the solution I would
choose. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.
