Set your Outlook Express options to automatically clean out your Deleted Items folder every time you close the program. To do this:
1. In the Inbox, press ALT+T followed by the letter O to open Options. 2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+TAB once to move to the Maintenance page. 3. The first item you land on should be the Empty Messages from the 'Deleted Items' Folder on Exit. Use the SPACEBAR to make certain that this is checked. Patti, I was shocked when I first found out that when you deleted an email it was moved from you inbox folder to a deleted folder and not removed completely from outlook. Once discovering this I then, started using the "Shift + Delete" which will wipe it right then and there and not place it in your deleted folder. BE careful when you do this, it's final no changing your mind. At least when you do a regular "Delete" you have a second chance to change your mind in the "Delete" folder.
