Understood. "Manage" vs. detect is a good way to put it. Is there a significant benefit of knowing the number of objects vs. just memory delta?
If you are only interested in the memory delta and not necessarily the number of allocated objects, I suppose it is possible to use Runtime.gc around tests to measure it. Would this be a viable (more portable) mode to run the profiling extensions to junit?
