Hi Rickard
I have to disagree with you there.
It's like saying: all SQL relational databases support joins (I know that
the simpler ones don't but just imagine for a moment they do) therefore if I
use joins my code will still be portable. This is rubbish, because even
those rdbms's that support joins do so in different ways. Similarly for
commit options.
And in addition to that there is my main point - namely the OR mapping
generated by the container is implementation detail of the container. It is
specific to that container and the container developer could quite
legitimately wake up one morning and decide that String will no longer map
to varchar but instead to a BLOB. And as long as he maintains the public
interfaces it's your problem if your code stops working because it assumed a
mapping to varchar. And of course different containers are likely to handle
OR mapping differently anyway. And that's completely ignoring the use of
non-relational databases.

Depends on what you mean by non-portable. Commit options and their
various effects are described in the EJB specification. WebLogic
supports it through the db-is-shared flag.
Setting the commit option does not make your app non-portable. It just
means that you must choose a server that implements the desired commit
option (and of course JBoss supports all three options)
