John,
I am curious about your load-balanced Tomcat configuration. Are you running
load balanced Tomcats outside of the JBoss memory space? I have used load
balanced Tomcats before, however, I thought to do that you had to run
Tomcats outside of JBoss memory space. Can you give some information on
your configuration in these regards?

sub note: I have been working with Jboss 2.4.x w/ Tomcat 3.2.3, Resin 2.0.5,
and Jetty 3.x JSP/Servlet containers running in same VM as JBoss, using
Apache as HTTP server and/or using TUX AC3 HTTP server (both for static
pages only) on RedHat 7.x machines w/ Sun JDK 1.3.1_01, Sun JDK 1.3.1_02,
and Sun JDK 1.3.1_03 as well as IBM's 1.3.1-01 JDK with no problems. My
RedHat systems use different stock kernels from RedHat, as well as custom
kernels I compile myself, usually 2.4.18 to 2.4.19-preX kernels. Also, I
have run JBoss 2.4.3 w/ Tomcat 3.2.3 on Solaris 7 and 8 w/ Sun JDK 1.3.1_01,
Windows NT4 and 2K w/ Sun JDK 1.3.1_01, and on FreeBSD 4.5 w/ native JDK
1.3.1 and Linux Sun JDK 1.3.1_01 with no problems. On some systems I have
also experimented with using Jikes compiler with good results.
I have tried JRockit 1.3.1 on a couple of RedHat systems and my findings so
far is that is that it is very fast, but extremely unstable. I am still
performing load-testing on the Sun versus IBM JDK, however, so far I prefer
the IBM JDK 1.3.1-01 on systems where supported, i.e.. Linux.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, we use RH 7.1 distribution, kernel 2.4.9-34smp, Sun 1.3.1_02 and JBoss
2.4.6_Tomcat-4.0.3. We have been running since March 1st with zero issues
or unplanned downtime. The only change we've made that was critical is the
addition of the statement "ulimit -s 2048" in run.sh before we start the
jvm, some JVM problem documented elsewhere. Equipment: Dell 1550(2), dual
1.26 processors, and 512M with load balanced tomcat front ended by Apache.
